Wedding bells does jingle as much as christmas bells do. It is just like one of these festive periods. So much joy and happiness in the air and it just seems to infect everyone around the to be's.
Planning a wedding in Nigeria without the aid of a professional could be very cumbersome, but trust us to work it out in our conventional style. One has to put just about everything into consideration. Ranging from; the meal, reception, decor, music, wedding gown, the bridal train.....etc. Issues about budgets, guest lists and styles all have to be considered.
Yesterday, my friend Onyi and I had to go to the market to pick more of the "aso ebi" materials for my elder sister's wedding coming up next month and be ready to catch all the exclusive moments on urchsparkles.blogspot.com. I must confess it was very tiring, but the joy is in being part of my sister's wedding success story
The previous Saturday, my sister, her designer and I made our way to shop for the "aso ebi". It was a very exhilarating time. We spent approximately 5hours moving from store to store just to make the best choice for the colour of the day "purple, silver and lilac". Hmmm......it was no easy feat! We finally had to settle for a purple ankara with specks of gold and lilac (rather than silver)
We brought home the stuffs and invited some neighbours to come pick theirs. Hmmm.....it was time to hear very strong opinionated individuals. "You should have bought orange" "dont you think green would have been lovely" "this ankara is outdated" ahn ahn!!!! One madam actually said "you should have bought lace for my set". The madam in question is a full time house wife who depends on her oga for monthly upkeep. Women and our fashion world.
In
a bid to making my sisters wedding a success, I have researched on the
basic wedding planning tips and I want to share it with you on my blog.
FIX
A DATE: the bride and groom have to come together and fix the date for
the wedding. Certain things would have to be considered ie the season
especially if it would be an outdoor event.
DRAW UP A BUDGET: This is very essential. Know your pocket strength. If u have sponsors, fine! Gather all funds. Then channel it right. Dont go making plans for things to be paid for after the wedding. I have seen couples who went into debts because of wedding plans. Just cut your coat according to your size. Dont plan a flamboyant wedding if you dont have the pre-requisite for it.
GET A WEDDING PLANNER: You may decide to pay for a professional to plan your wedding, but if you have no such item in your budget, you could appoint certain trusted individuals close to you to plan and organise it for you. Its not advisable for the groom and the bride to do most of the planning because they ought to look stress free on the "d- day"
HAVE A CHECKLIST: This list contains the list of things to be done to make the day a success. As you accomplish them, tick them out so you would know how well you are progressing with the preparations. You get to add, subtract, and make adjustments where necessary,
START EARLY: Given the nature of things, no one wants to be taken by surprise. You have to start early with your plans. No impromptu whatever! The invitations must be handed out early enough to help your invitees plan their calander. You would also be able to achieve alot when you start as early as 4months to the wedding than a 2 weeks preparation.
BE READY TO COMPROMISE: Knowing fully well that your spouse have a different plan from yours as regards to the success of the wedding one has to have an open and flexible mind. Consider the family of the one other when planning and be ready to shelve your opinions when necessary.
Putting these highlighted tips into consideration, am very optimistic that your wedding would be a happy and memorable one. Using this medium to wish my course mates Jane and Obidiya a happy married life.
